Dr. Jeaneane Fowler is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Wales College, Newport, in South Wales, U.K. She was formerly head of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at the University and is now attached to the research-based Study Centre for Archaeology, Religion and Biogeography (SCARAB). While her main responsibilities at the University are now concerned with personal research and the supervision of students preparing for postgraduate Masters and Doctoral awards, she also lectures on undergraduate courses.
In 1986 Dr. Fowler gained her doctorate in Semitic languages, and her published doctoral thesis became the standard work in the field. She has extensive knowledge of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, and Taoism, and since joining the University of Wales has lectured in world religions. She has also lectured on Humanism at the University, having devised the current courses taught there on that topic.
Dr. Fowler's research interests lie in philosophy, particularly eastern philosophy. She has written two books for the Beliefs and Practices series published by Sussex Academic Press. In this series, Hinduism: Beliefs and Practices (The Sussex Library of Religious Beliefs and Practices) was the Choice outstanding title for 1997. Her second book in the same series, Humanism: Beliefs and Practices (The Sussex Library of Religious Beliefs and Practices), forms the basic material from which the COHE modules in Religion, Spirituality, and Humanism are written.
Dr. Fowler has just published a third book in the series, Taoism: Beliefs and Practices. This newest title examines Chinese philosophy and religion, including Confucianism, the humanist strand of Chinese culture.
Dr. Fowler is also the author of Perspectives of Reality: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Hinduism and is editor of World Religions: An Introduction for Students (The Sussex Library of Religious Beliefs and Practices), in which she contributed the entries on Buddhism and Hinduism. She wrote the entry on Humanism for Encarta 2000.
Apart from a career in writing and lecturing, Dr. Fowler is a fully qualified and experienced teacher of children and students of all ages. She has taught in the educational system of the U.K. at all levels and is experienced in the teaching skills essential for student learning, motivation, and progression. She has been responsible for the writing, validation, and accreditation of all the modules in Philosophy and Religious Studies at the University of Wales College, Newport.
